Peek-a-boo Canyon in January: An Unforgettable Hiking Experience

Located in the stunning Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, Peek-a-boo Canyon is a hiking destination that never fails to impress. Despite having explored most trails in the area multiple times, we always look forward to returning to this prime hiker's haven. The trails here are long and demanding, but the scenery and quality of the hikes make it well worth the effort.

The Needles District offers some of the highest-quality hiking in the Southwest, with a diverse range of landscapes and geological formations on display. As we made our way through the canyon, we were struck by the sheer scale and beauty of the sandstone towers, fins, desert varnish cliffs, alcoves, gnomes, mushrooms, domes, pour-offs, potholes, and wide views of the surrounding landscape.

The hike culminates in a thrilling descent down a ladder into the Salt Creek drainage, where we were treated to a stunning passage of rippled and fluted rock that will tantalize photographer and hiker alike. One of our local gems is Red Canyon, also known as Peek-a-boo, which offers an unforgettable hiking experience without the crowds.

The route from Squaw Flats to the springs in Salt Creek Canyon and back covers approximately 10.2 miles (16.4 km), making it a challenging but rewarding hike. As we explored this incredible canyon, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such natural beauty up close. Peek-a-boo Canyon is truly one of our favorite trails anywhere, and we can't wait to return and explore more of its secrets.
